A decision to increase the cotton cess from Rs 20 to Rs 50 per bale was taken at the 79th general body meeting of Pakistan Central Cotton Committee (PCCC) after consulting All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) in order to raise revenue for research activities in the area of agriculture in Pakistan.
Nazar Mohammad Gondal – the Federal Minister for Food and Agriculture, while presiding the general body meeting of PCCC, stated that cess on cotton has not been raised during the past three years and the readiness of stakeholders to raise the cess is likely to bring its outcome in terms of improved research results by scientists.
The Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) was, however, of the opinion that the general body meeting of PCCC decision to increase the cotton cess was taken without discussing the issue with the cotton ginners of Pakistan.
According to PCGA, the government should consult all the stakeholders before taking any decision with regard to increase in tax, cess or levy.
