Weavers stage protest to seek govt support

Jan '11
Weavers recently staged a demonstration in Andhra Pradesh while seeking the implementation of the Handloom Reservation Act 1985. The Act is aimed at the safety and growth of the handloom weavers across the country.

Besides, demanding the implementation of the Act, the weavers demanded that the state government should take active steps and provide them with the raw materials like dyes, silk, colors, mulberry and other chemicals as the prices of these raw materials have increased throughout 2010 and the abrupt rise has jeopardized their trade. This has also risked jobs of around one million workers in the industry.

Further, they also demanded that the state government should not reclaim the loans as well as the interest on all kinds of the loans approved for the weavers. Also they urged the state government to introduce a special financial package for the weavers in view of their difficult financial conditions.
