The Federal Advisor on Textile – Dr Mirza Ikhtiar Baig has said that the decision to increase the customs duty on fabrics from both Pakistan and China has been taken by the Turkish government because of the demands made by domestic fabric producers in Turkey.

The government has raised the customs duty on import of fabrics from Pakistan to 28 percent and that on the import of fabrics from China to 30 percent.

Dr Baig had discussed the matter with Dr Yousaf Junaid – Pakistan's Consul General in Istanbul, Turkey and had given him the suggestion to raise the issue with the relevant authorities in Turkey and organize a meeting to discuss the same.

He further revealed that the decision would influence the export of fabrics, particularly those which are still under the manufacturing process in the factories located in Pakistan and are likely to be exported to Turkey.

He also commented that Pakistan is one of the key exporters of denim and grey fabrics to Turkey and the hike in the customs duty would adversely impact the exports of the country.
