Handicrafts exports of India has enhanced by 18 percent to touch $1.8 billion in the initial ten months (April-January) of the fiscal year 2010-11 from the corresponding period during the last fiscal year, said the Textiles Minister, Dayanidhi Maran.

He added, while speaking at the global jewellery summit and exhibition titled 'Abhushan', that during the last fiscal year the handicrafts exports from India remained at $2.5 billion. About 70 percent of the country's overall handicrafts exports are constituted by the US and the EU. The sector also provides employment to 1 million people.

The summit is held by the World Crafts Council and has been made possible by the joint efforts of Crafts Council of India and Delhi Crafts Council. It is based on the theme of promoting jewellery designed from unconventional as well as environment-friendly materials like recycled materials, beads, natural fibres and terracotta.

During the three-day event, more than 200 participants including craftspersons, designers as well as exporters would display their products made out of paper, wood and silver. The summit will help the craftspersons to learn better techniques to enhance their competitiveness in the global and the domestic markets. It will also help them to adjust with the trends that are prevalent worldwide and accordingly diversify their items, said Maran.

The major objective behind organizing this summit is to generate interactive atmosphere where traditional craftspersons can get an opportunity to interact with the experts and use the globally accepted designs on unconventional and eco-friendly materials to give them a new look.
