A community eri spinning and weaving unit was opened at the Blue hill colony of Wokha district in Nagaland on February 4.
Around 25 metric tons of eri cocoons are yearly produced by the Wokha district. These eri cocoons are used for making silk yarns and various types of silk fabrics with conventional Naga designs and motifs.
The sericulture department has set up the unit under the 'Community Eri spinning and weaving project' which is funded by the state.
The members of the “Eyilo” self-help group can take advantage of the unit and set an example for the entire community of the region to learn as well as apply the latest technology in the spinning and weaving processes.
Further, the members of the group can also maintain uniformity as well as continuity in the spinning of silk yarn and weaving processes. They can take up this activity as an employment opportunity and generate a fairly good source of income from it.
