Chinese spandex output rises rapidly

China's spandex market demand has rapidly increased since entering the new century with rapid growth in production capacity.

China's spandex manufacturing enterprises grew to more than 30 in 2009 and total annual production capacity was close to 340,000 tons, accounting for more than 60 percent of the world's total output.

The production proportion has continued to increase in the last two years. The number of enterprises with annual output of 10,000 tons increased to 15 in 2009 from five in 2005 and the number of enterprises with annual output of 20,000 tons increased from zero in 2005 to four in 2009.

Spandex exports were nearly 30,000 tons in 2007, but exports declined slightly due to the impact of financial crisis in the second half of 2008, the trend continued to the first quarter of 2009. Export situation improved in the second quarter of 2009.

In 2001 to 2004, China's spandex imports rapidly increased with rapid growth of domestic demand, which in turn had a greater impact on domestic enterprises and industrial development.

However, import volume clearly declined after the final ruling of anti-dumping on spandex in 2005 and fell 40.7 percent in 2006. Import volume remains at 15,000-17,000 tons in subsequent years.
