The United States authorities have stated that the intellectual property rights and labour issues prevailing in Philippines are impeding the passage of the proposed “Save Our Industries Act”.

The proposed garment and textile bill is aimed at revival of the garment and textile industries of the US as well as Philippines.

Department of Trade and Industry's Garments and Textile Industry Development Office (GTIDO)'s Director Thelma Dumpit-Murillo revealed that, the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) raised the labour and IP issues of Philippines during the recent videoconference on the mutual Philippines-US Trade and Investment Facilitation Agreement (TIFA).

He stated that, as there are labour and IP matters pending for the Philippine government to resolve, and thus the USTR does not seem to be positive on passing the proposed bill in the near-term.

However, the Philippine Department of Labour and Employment have claimed that, they are already attending the issues that the US authorities have raised, Murillo revealed.

The USTR has added Quiapo to the list of the 30 tarnished sites which are active on the front of infringement of IP across the globe.
