According to an expert, there is no valid reason for denying use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in production of cotton in Zambia.
He said that the Zambian government should sincerely consider use of genetically modified cotton seeds in cultivation to raise output.
Due to low production, Zambian cotton fails to satisfactorily compete in the international markets.
Meanwhile, productions in countries like India and Kenya which have used genetically modified cotton seeds have grown by almost three times, and these countries are performing quite well than Zambia in the domestic as well as in the international markets, he said.
He stated that, if aptly utilized, the country's cotton industry has the potential to substantially contribute to the growth of country's economy.
Cotton yield in Zambia, remained undesirably low during last year, and averaged at around 450-650 kg per hectare; he said and added that, farmers in the country are struggling to raise the productivity.
