Alexium International announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Bruck Textiles Pty Ltd outlining an agreement for Bruck to represent Alexium as its sole manufacturing and distribution partner within the Australian and New Zealand market.
The agreement involves a commercial production trial of Alexium's Reactive Surface Treatment (RST) technology with three different fabric types, supplied by Bruck, to demonstrate RST's performance capabilities on a commercial scale for eventual production for the Australasian market.
Bruck is a leader in textile innovation and technology, manufacturing high performance textile products in Australia for a variety of protective, military, industrial, household, automotive and apparel applications. Since 1970, Bruck has been the major supplier of Combat and Non Combat apparel fabrics for the Australian Defense Forces. Bruck is also a key supplier to Australia's leading work wear brands that operate at both retail and institutional level. Darren O'Loughlin, of Bruck said “that the Alexium RST Technology had industry changing potential for protective coatings and treatments and Bruck was very pleased to be able to work with Alexium for the Australasian market. The potential environmental benefits and costs savings using RST technology was a valuable added attraction”.

The RST technology is a protective treatment that can be applied to apparel and other textiles to provide multifunctional properties such as chemical and biological protection, flame retardance, water proofing and oil repellency. Alexium has recently signed a Licence option agreement with SSM Industries in Tennessee, a leading supplier of flame retardant apparel to the NASCAR Industry. Alexium is also actively involved in US Department of Defense tenders in the area of specialist protective apparel and has an ongoing Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with the US Air Force.
Following the success of its pilot unit, Alexium has built a larger production line at its manufacturing plant in Greer South Carolina, with the expectation it will have a production speed ten times faster than the prototype.
The MoU provides for the parties to negotiate a formal licence agreement to establish an RST production facility in Australia, based on upfront, milestone and royalty payments.
Alexium International Group Limited holds proprietary patent applications for a process developed initially by the US Department of Defense , which allows for the surface modification and attachment of nano particles or multiple chemical functional groups to surfaces or substrates to provide functions such as water proofing, oil proofing, anti microbial, non-stick and UV protection. Applications under development include but are not limited to textiles, paints, packaging, glass and building materials.
