The small and medium scale producers of the diversified jute items are now suffering the heat due to falling demand on back of soaring cost of production.
The domestic as well as the global buyers are not showing much interest in purchasing diversified jute goods like shopping bags, water-pot carriers and tiffin bags.
The Jute Diversification and Promotion Centre recently organized a 10-day fair which showcased diversified jute items. The event was aimed at campaigning use of environmental-friendly jute items.
61 jute artisans participating in the fair displayed various products right from shopping bags to ladies bags, slippers to cushion covers, mats, scarves and showpieces, at the event.
Prices of fine jute fabric have gone up by around 40 per cent per yard. Meanwhile, there has also been a drop in the demand for export items like ladies bags and shopping bags from global buyers, which all together is affecting the industry and the producers of these items.
