The Senate Standing Committee on Textile Industry suggested that just like neighbouring countries like India, Pakistan too should try to maximise per acre yield of cotton.

The Secretary informed the Committee that, owing to a difficult situation last year, due to global scarcity of cotton, the government initiated several regulatory measures to restrain yarn exports.

The Committee during its meeting also directed the Textile Ministry to submit details regarding the subsidies provided by the government to the textile sector along with the details of tax returns.

Senator Gul Muhammad, who presided over the meeting as Chairman, while underlining the importance of the textile industry as the leading export sector of the country, condemned the fact that, gas load shedding has compelled many factories in the country compelled to cease operations.

The Committee proposed that the textile industry should achieve the export target of $25 billion, and also recommended that APTMA should set up a new department for developing new varieties of cottonseeds.

The Committee requested the Ministry to devise a strategy to offset the deficit expected in the cotton output, this year. The Ministry was even asked to closely partner with the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Agriculture.
