Egypt's textile and spinning companies have been passing through a rough patch facing an acute shortage of the raw materials. Due to such shortage, some private sector plants have been compelled to shut down as they were unable to continue production.
The Textile Workers Syndicate chairman Saeed al-Gohari urged the government to take immediate actions to bail out the industry as well as workers.
He appealed the government to allocate more land for cotton cultivation to meet factories' needs. He suggested some other measures like pumping new investments in the companies and reforming financial and management structures too. He favored strict action to counter dumping and smuggling activities to protect the local industries.
Though cotton is Egypt's oldest crop, the Government has not shown any interest to provide subsidy for its cultivation. Industry observers believe that Egypt's cotton textile industry has suffered a lot because of this attitude.
Al-Gohari stressed hard to improve cotton productivity. Because of dependency on imported cotton, cotton production has declined severely for last some years, he said.
