Zhuhai to be world's largest PTA production base

Zhuhai of Guangdong Province will emerge as the largest production base of PTA after completion of its ambitious PTA phase III project. After completion of the project, the total capacity of Zhuhai BP PTA will be 2.95 million tons / year. Its phase I and II has become operational already.

Zhuhai PTA project has taken place with an approximate investment of US $600 million by the BP Group. The BP Group is among world's three major petrochemical enterprises.

The PTA phase III project is one of the biggest projects for petrochemical industry implemented during the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan". Zhuhai Municipal Government announced that it had been accelerating its pace.

With the rapid growth of China's polyester industry, domestic demand of PTA is very strong. But China is unable to produce enough PTA to cater the needs of the domestic industries. As a result, it has to import a big quantity of PTA to narrow the gap between demand and supply every year.

In 2011 alone, China has to import more than 5 million tons of PTA. The Zhuhai PTA Phase III project will significantly reduce China's dependency on PTA imports.
