1 min read

Cotton prices have gone up to E £43,000 per ton from L £12,000 per ton, while selling prices of goods have not moved enough. In order to protest this rise in cotton price, workers in industrial city of Mahalla have resorted to strike since April 23.

The strikers wanted that the former Agriculture Minister should be made responsible for decline in country's cotton output.

The striking workers also raised a demand for subsidization of the cotton prices through exemption from sales tax, banning raw cotton exports, tax imposition on commodity exports, domestic industry assistance, provision of gas to industries at subsidised rates and nullification of customs duty on imported textiles till the crisis situation ends.
