Silk sector expert derides Jharkhand CM's demand

Stimulated by the significant rise in local silk production figures for last five years, Chief Minister of Jharkhand state - Arjun Munda had recently called on the Union government to review its decision of reducing excise and custom duty on silk imports to 5 percent from 35 percent.

Reacting to this statement of Munda, the Former President - Eastern UP Exporters Association - Mr Narendra Kapoor told fibre2fashion, “The view that, duty relaxation will harm Jharkhand silk sector is baseless as there is no match with quality of Jharkhand silk or Indian silk yarn with Chinese silk yarn.

“India produces about 18,000 metric tons of silk yarn against consumption of 28,000 metric tons. Thus a gap of 10,000 metric tons is filled by Chinese silk yarn which is consumed by the Indian silk industry in Varanasi, Surat, Bangalore, Bhagalpur, etc.

“We as Indians would prefer to use Indian silk if available in adequate quantity and of international quality. The Central Silk Board (CSB) should strive to raise output of quality yarn by using modern techniques and know-how.

“Till then we need Chinese silk yarn to fill the supply-demand gap. We urge the government to also remove the five percent import duty. Due to this reduction of import duty, illegal imports and under invoicing has also stopped”, he concluded by saying.
