Inventors from Italy have designed a machine that uses wool to suck up oil spills.

According to them, coarse, greasy wool is the most effective to mop up the oil from the sea because such wool can be squeezed to relieve oil and can be re-used several times to absorb the same quantity of oil.

The new machine is similar to machines already being used in wool manufacturing. It can be attached to ships and has a capacity to carry 10,000 kg of wool.

Estimating that every kg is able to collect 100 litres of oil from the water, the device can mop up a million litres of oil from the ocean.
