India may consider hiking cotton export limit

India is considering increasing the limit of cotton exports from the current 5.5 million bales (1 bale = 170 kg). However, the final decision will be taken by a Group of Ministers, according to Commerce Secretary Rahul Khullar.

This is in accordance with the statement made by Commerce Minister Anand Sharma last month in which he had said that the Government will decide whether to increase the limit of cotton exports beginning cotton year 2011/12.

It may be recalled that due to untimely rain, India had earlier revised its cotton output estimates downwards for the cotton year 2010/11, which runs from October to September.

Cotton production is now estimated to touch 30.5 million bales, down from estimates of 31.2 million bales in April and 32.9 million bales in October.
