The 12th session of the Council of the International Jute Study Group (IJSG) was held at the IJSG Secretariat in Dhaka recently.
The IJSG is an intergovernmental body set up under the aegis of UNCTAD to function as the International Commodity Body (ICB) for Jute, Kenaf and other allied fibres.
The Council is the highest authority of the IJSG, which consists of all members of the organisation which meet at least once a year.
The two-day session was chaired by Ms. Rita Menon, Chairperson, Council of IJSG & Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. Establishment matters as well as administrative and financial matters of the IJSG were discussed by the Council.
Other issues discussed during the meeting included membership of the IJSG, development of market for jute products, assessment of world jute situation and other related matters.
The Council re-elected Ms. Rita Menon as Chairperson of the IJSG Council for the jute year 2011/2012. Mr. Andrew Barnard, First Secretary, Delegation of European Union to Bangladesh was elected as Vice-Chairman.
