Weavers' upliftment has topped the Orissa Cabinet Minister for Textiles, Usha Devi's agenda list, as she picked up the cause, as her first assignment.

A new government policy which is underway would focus on betterment of the socio-economic conditions of the weavers in Orissa who in spite of being skilful are hit by poverty, she said.

During her first visit to her homeland Chikiti in Ganjam, the Minister stated that, over 400,000 weavers in the region would be covered under the new policy.

She would first examine the proposed policy and would discuss the same with the Cabinet before its formal announcement; she said and added that, weaver's upliftment would prove to be very advantageous for Ganjam which is well known for its Berhampuri pattas.

The Minister said that, the policy would aim at developing a market connection for handloom goods so that the artisans could earn good returns for their products.
