Dr. Murugesa Bhoopathi, Vice Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Agriculture University (TNAU), while speaking at a two-day annual research workshop in Coimbatore on Cotton and Sericulture, said that TNAU proposes to undertake research to develop new varieties of colour cotton, which are more viable.

The Vice-Chancellor said that colour cotton could serve as a good solution to counter the problem of pollution that the dyeing factories face, particularly at places like Tirupur due to heavy concentration of such units.

He added that organic cotton is also a promising alternative, but its success greatly depends on its capacity to earn better returns for farmers. Besides, organic cotton has low productivity of around four to five quintals per hectare and hence, unless the cultivators draw higher returns for their additional efforts, it would not become possible to develop organic cotton.
