Peruvian textiles & clothing exports to surge despite COVID-19: TexPro

Peruvian textiles and clothing exports exceeded the pre-pandemic level in the beginning of 2021 and the monthly average exports are projected to reach $123.09 million between May and July 2021, owing to the implementation of healthy economic policies and rising demand from the US and the EU. The exports rose consistently after experiencing a drop in the first half of 2020.

The monthly average of the textile and clothing exports of the country were $58.17 million in the first half of 2020 when the pandemic’s impact was severe. It recovered in the second half of 2020, rising by 49.68 per cent to reach a monthly average of $87.07 million.

The country’s monthly average exports reached $108.26 million between January 2021 and April 2021, increasing by 24.33 per cent over the average monthly exports in the second half of 2020, according to Fibre2Fashion’s market analysis tool TexPro.

Exports of natural fibres and related products such as pima cotton garments and alpaca fibre products have a significant role to play in the Peruvian textiles and apparel business. The demand for Peruvian alpaca fibre products is notable in the international markets as Peru supplies high quality alpaca fibre with high genetic merits. Manufacturers take care of the nutrition of the alpacas, which positively impacts their health and reproduction capabilities, and ultimately helps to obtain softer and high-quality alpaca fibre.

Peru has also built a sustainability strategy to improve its economy, equity and the environment by focusing on five important aspects including use of renewable energy, efficient and responsible use of water, carbon neutrality, clean production by reducing or eliminating residues and decent labour.

Most textiles and clothing manufacturers hold the certifications such as Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED), Renewable Energy Resources (RER), the Blue Certificate, Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) certificate, Global Recycled Standard (GRS) and Fair-Trade certification. These measures have increased the demand of Peruvian products in the developed countries such as the US and the EU.

Peru specialises in quality knitted Pima cotton garments which are ideal for stay-at-home fashion. A new brand called Alpaca del Perú has also been launched recently for luxury fashion products, offering sweaters, dresses, coats, capes, ponchos, accessories and more.
