Sri Lanka's textile exports rise 13.3% in Jan '16

Reversing the declining trend that prevailed in last quarter of 2015, exports of textiles and garments from Sri Lanka increased by 13.3 per cent year-on-year in January 2016.

During the month, Sri Lanka's export earnings from textiles and garments stood at $464.4 million, compared to $409.9 million earned in the same month of the previous year, according to the data recently released by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

Garment exports to both traditional and non-traditional markets improved during the month.

Textiles and apparel accounted for about 65.27 per cent of all industrial exports and about 51.95 per cent of all exports made by the South Asian nation during January 2016.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka's expenditure on import of textiles and textile articles increased by 25.4 per cent year-on-year to $250.9 million during the period under review, the data showed.

In 2015, the island nation's export earnings from textiles and garments declined by 2.2 per cent year-on-year to $4.820 billion, compared to $4.929 billion in 2014. (RKS)
