No weather impact on holiday shopping - ICSC

International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) informed that the weather outside has been frightful these past few months, but this has not derailed holiday shopping, only shifted some of it.

This survey is commissioned by ICSC.

Some 68 percent of US consumers have kept to their usual holiday shopping patterns despite some inclement weather this season, according to the survey.

“Since the United States is such a geographically diverse country, adverse weather often simply causes regional disruptions and, as a result, can make spending uneven in markets around the nation,” said Michael P. Niemira, ICSC's chief economist and director of research. “This pattern is no different even during the holiday season.”

The survey of 1,020 adults found that 23 percent of consumers in the Northeast and 19 percent of those in the Midwest have postponed some of their shopping this season because of harsh weather. Nationwide, 16 percent reported that same impact.

With the official start of winter on December 21, seasonal items will be in high demand. Some 57 percent of those surveyed said they would purchase such items as coats, snow blowers and portable heaters closer to when they need them. About 31 percent, however, shop in advance of the season, giving retailers the opportunity to lengthen their selling time.

“What's interesting about this survey is that we now have a better understanding of how consumers think they are being impacted by the weather, especially since this is the coldest and stormiest December in five years,” said Bill Kirk, vice president of retail operations at SDI/Weather Trends.
