The Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC) announced that Alice Howard-Graham, from University for the Creative Arts (UCA), Farnham, UK, is the winner of the CSI Colour Award 2012. Alice wins £500, the CSI Colour Award 2012 and a trip to Hong Kong to receive her award at a prestigious SDC event later this year.  The competition is sponsored by Color Solutions International (CSI).

Alice graduated in July this year with a first class BA (Hons) in Printed Textiles for Fashion and Interiors.  She commented: "I am so happy to have been awarded the CSI Colour Award 2012. The other finalists' entries were great and showed fantastic use of colour and design, I feel privileged to be among them! I am ecstatic to be flying to Hong Kong for the awards ceremony! I have never been before and am sure it will be a brilliant and inspiring trip. I think it is extremely important for young designers to take part in competitions and other live projects during, or after, university - thank you so much to SDC and CSI for this opportunity".

Alice's entry was entitled 'Industrial Constructions'.  The judges commented: "Alice's entry was well executed, with great connection between history, architecture, art and design, and a modern, clean palette of strongly contrasting hues.  Her design was wonderfully original".

The brief asked the students to design a trend card for Spring/Summer 2013 using CSI Color Search (www.csicolorsearch.com), with their colour theme and CSI colour palette clearly shown.  The competition was open to undergraduate fashion and textile design students globally, and attracted huge interest, with over 230 students registering from countries including India, Australia, USA, Ireland, Singapore and the UK.

Second place in the competition went to Michael Power, a Fashion Design student at the National College of Art and Design (NCAD), Dublin, Ireland.  With an entry entitled 'Optical Pop', Michael impressed the judges with his 'thorough research, bold presentation and strong colours'.  Michael commented: "to be recognised in such an esteemed international competition means a lot. It has boosted my confidence in my own ability and will allow me to interact with the industry in a more positive and assured way. I enjoyed the design process immensely and am very grateful to the SDC and all those involved".
