Cotton ginneries in Pakistan received 13.328 million bales as on March 1, 2014, showing a rise of 4.43 percent compared to arrival of 12.763 million bales during the corresponding period of last season, according to the consolidated statement of cotton arrivals in factories of Pakistan, prepared by the Pakistan Cotton Ginners’ Association (PCGA), using data collected with joint cooperation from All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) and the Karachi Cotton Association (KCA).

The data shows total cotton arrivals growing by 2.13 percent year-on-year to 9.575 million bales in Punjab province, and by 10.8 percent year-on-year to 3.753 million bales in Sindh province.

Of the total arrival of 13.328 million bales, around 13.294 million bales were pressed by ginners, of which 12.329 million bales were sold, leaving an unsold stock of 964,846 bales with the ginners, as on March 1, the PCGA said.

The textile mills in Pakistan consumed 11.966 million bales, while another 363,394 bales of cotton were sold to exporters, the data showed.

At present, a total of 95 ginning factories are operational in Punjab compared to 279 ginneries that were operational during the same time last season.

Similarly, 3 ginning units are currently operational in the Sindh region, as against 17 units being operational during the corresponding period last year.

In 2012-13 cotton season, Pakistan’s cotton output fell by 12.81 percent year-on-year to 12.915 million bales, compared to the previous season’s production of 14.813 million bales, mainly because of less sowing of the crop.

Meanwhile, at the third meeting of Pakistan’s Federal Committee on Cotton (FCC), held under the chairmanship of Rukhsana Shah, Secretary, Ministry of Textile Industry (MinTex), Cotton Commissioner Dr. Khalid Abdullah stated that a target of 14.1 million bales was set for the year 2013-14 and the cotton crop size for the season had been assessed at 12.32 million bales of 170 kg.

The meeting unanimously agreed to fix the cotton production target at 15.1 million bales of 170 kg each for 2014-15 season.
