Textile Society of Hong Kong (TSHK) declares Thai Textile Society tour:
On this long weekend, we will have the opportunity to soak in the serene beauty of Luang Phabang, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and visit weaving villages in Luang Phabang province whose weavers continue to preserve centuries old natural dye recipes and traditional weaving techniques to produce textiles for the market.
Thai Textile Society Natural Dyeing and Weaving in Luang Phabang, Laos 11 — 14 August 2006
The former royal capital abounds with textile galleries, silversmiths, and other handicraft outlets. Participants can also visit the night market held in front of the National Museum, the former royal palace, and the renovated hilltribe market.
Our accommodations will be at the Maison Souvannaphoum, the previous residence of Prince Souvanna Phouma.
We will be dining at the best restaurants in the city, serving French, royal Lao, and fusion cuisine. Linda McIntosh, a Lao textile researcher, will lead this trip.
Linda is completing a PhD in Lao textiles and has curated exhibitions on Tai textiles, including an exhibition on Lao costume that she co-curated at the National Museum of Luang Phabang in late 2005.
She has also worked as a handicraft consultant in Laos, traveling to remote areas to research and help develop handicrafts such as weaving as alternative income generators.
