Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) announces complaint: Objection to an ad for moisturising cream in the national press. The ad stated "New DermaSalve is the first dry skin moisturiser that is totally free of all common irritants.

With no alcohol, fragrances, parabens or lanolin, the DermaSalve range for hands, feet and body makes pure common sense for sensitive skin.

The first ever moisturising cream with no known irritants*". The asterisked footnote stated "*Contains no potential sensitising agents as listed in the EU Cosmetics Directive." The complainant challenged the claim "The first ever moisturising cream with no known irritants*".

Adjudication-Complaint not upheld:
DermaSalve Services Ltd (DermaSalve) said that repeated exposure of sensitising agents led to skin irritation.

They said they had used the term "irritants" instead of "sensitisers" because they believed that consumers were unlikely to understand what sensitisers were.

DermaSalve said they had linked the text "irritants" with an asterisk to the explanation in the footnote which stated "Contains no potential sensitising agents as listed in the EU Cosmetics Directive".

DermaSalve said the EU had been compiling a list of skin sensitisers for over 30 years and had recently included essential oils in addition to chemical ingredients.

They sent us a list of sensitisers from the EU Cosmetics Directive, the British National Formularly (BNF) and the Monthly Index of Medical Specialities (MIMS).
