Clothing stores register positive growth in Aug

National Statistics of United Kingdom released the retail sales reports of August 2006. The volume of retail sales in the three months June to August was 1.5 per cent higher than in the previous three months.

This follows 1.9 per cent growth in the three months to July and compares with an increase of 0.8 per cent at the same time in 2005. The average three-monthly growth rate over the last five years is 1.0 per cent.

Within non-food stores all sectors showed positive growth with clothing stores the highest at 1.9 per cent, household goods stores at 1.8 per cent and 'other' non-food stores at 1.3 per cent.

The non-store retailing sector showed 2.5 per cent growth. Compared with the same period a year ago, total sales volumes in the three months to August 2006 were up 4.0 per cent, the same as last month which was the highest since December 2004.

Analysis of monthly figures shows that the total sales volume increased by 0.3 per cent between July and August. This follows zero growth in July and 0.7 per cent in June.

Household goods stores showed growth of 3.3 per cent following a decrease of 3.0 per cent last month and 'other' non food stores showed growth of 1.0 per cent. Sales growth in the non-store retailing sector was 6.3 per cent, the highest since December 2002. The total volume of sales in August was 4.3 per cent higher than in August 2005.

For the three months to August the unadjusted value of retail sales was 3.7 per cent higher than in the same period a year earlier. The average weekly value of sales in August was £4.7 billion, 4.2 per cent higher than in August 2005.
