ATIRA has finished a project on design of defensive clothing for Siachen armymen and is now designing anti-bacterial clothing for doctors using latest technical textiles.

Production of technical textiles in the country is much less compared to other types of textiles, due to shortage of appropriate machinery which is very costly. Principal Scientific Speaking to fibre2fashion, R M Sankar, In charge CL Centre, ATIRA informed that technical textiles cover only two percent of the country's 48,000 million square meters of fabric produced per year.

Sankar also said that production cost of technical military suits has been slashed by the project as ATIRA's suit costing only Rs10,000 compared to Rs90,000 for an imported suit. Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Dehradun has financed this project.

ATIRA is designing protective medical suits from chitosan, which is extracted from sea insects and possesses anti-bacterial properties. ATIRA's suit is expected to cost Rs90 which is half of $4 for imported suits at present.
