Statistical Service of Cyprus (CYSTAT) released the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for September 2006 increased by 1,17 units or 1.15 percent to 103,24 units compared to 102,07 in August 2006.

This is mainly due to increases in the prices of clothing and footwear following the end of summer sales as well as to increases in the prices of certain fresh fruit and vegetables and tuition fees of private educational institutions and part-time educational coaching centres. Decreases have been recorded in the prices of petroleum products.

The rate of increase of the Index and therefore the rate of inflation for September 2006 compared to September 2005 was 2.4 percent while the rate for August 2006 stood at 3.1 percent.

The decrease in the rate of inflation in September 2006 is due to the favourable effect of the reduction of petrol prices and to the fact that in September 2005 (which is used in the comparison) considerable increase had been registered in various goods and services.

For the period January-September 2006 the CPI recorded an increase of 2.9 percent compared to the corresponding period of 2005.
