Eye catching bags, clothing and cellular pouches made from bits and pieces are displayed at Co-optex showrooms in Tamil Nadu. Ladies' self help groups (SHGs) have been using cut pieces and leftover material to create many types of products for last three months.

M P Nirmala, Managing Director, Co-optex, said a group of confident lady tailors had made colourful bags, pouches, apparel for newborns, inskirts and nighties.

Co-optex took the help of Anna MGR Magalir Thittam before Navratri to find out Marialaya, Asha Nivas, Fathima Convent and other such institutions.

Association engaged many tailors and it gave training and designs to newcomers, then it began selling material with a fixed price for each piece. Some of these tailors' works were exhibited in the Co-optex showroom at Pantheon Road by Navratri.

Newcomers included women and girls who were rescued from streets and they designed cellular pouches having embroidery and glasswork. Officials and designers were stunned by their creativity.

Designer and Consultant Kalyani Pramod informed that these women made toilet bags from handloom material, whose insides had waterproof lining. She said the design line should be strengthened to secure production and earnings for them.
