ASSOMAC is the association that represents the Italian manufacturers of machines for the shoe, leathergoods and tannery industries, held its regular meeting on the 30th of June at the Association's headquarters in Vigevano, there weren't the celebrative aspects and the usual festive atmosphere with its characteristic feeling of belonging to the same community, and its strong feeling of solidarity and collaboration.

With a sense of responsibility, Assomac made this meeting an operational moment of opportunity for allowing each associate to express his discomfort due to the crisis, his worry, as well as his expectations.

In his address, President Giovanni Gaia briefly presented what was actually a true picture of the sector. In 2004, exports of shoe-manufacturing machinery diminished by 10.79%, notwithstanding the 9.15% increase in exports to Asia. Europe still accounts for 59.61% of the overall export business. This anti-historical datum is not in line with the evolution of the shoe-manufacturing activity.

If we turn our attention to leather-working machinery, we note that the sector is still holding its own because it has already undergone and metabolized its reducing. The little that still remains has already acquired the necessary antibodies and has thus become more immune to attack.

In fact, if we take our export business as an example, we see that ? inside an overall and still worrying decrease of 5.90% ? the 16.8% decrease in the exports for Europe "only" represents 38.19% of the total amount. Asia's growth of 2.43% represents 36.69%.
