USHSLA eyes Indian tanning & hides market

The U.S. Hide, Skin & Leather Association (USHSLA) is organizing a Trade Mission/Market Assessment to India. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is providing funding for USHSLA to look into developing the Indian market for U.S. hides.
Before we include India in our Unified Export Strategy (UES) to obtain funding to carry out market development activities in India, we need to understand the market in order to make informed decisions. With this in mind, we are looking at sending a small delegation to India with the following objectives:
- To give a seminar on “Benefits of Using U.S. Hides” at the India International Leather Fair in Chennai (formerly known as Madras)
- Conduct a market study to understand the Indian tanning industry and its needs for cattle hides.
We are asking that anyone in the industry who is interested to please contact the USHSLA office by Dec. 13, 2006. We will select the participants that will attend. We can only take three members, to be accompanied by a USHSLA staff person. We will travel from Washington, D.C. on Jan. 29, 2007 to Chennai and New Delhi, with a possible stop in Kanpur, close to Nepal, returning to the U.S. on Feb. 6, 2007.
Each of the four people will be required to make part of the presentation at the Leather Fair. They will also participate in the collection of data for the market assessment, including interviews, tannery visits, association networking, Indian and U.S. government meetings. At the conclusion of the trip, each of the four people will be responsible in compiling a report/market assessment based on findings made during the trade mission.
