The Helena May, 35 Garden Road, Central, 6:30pm drinks and light refreshments (free for members); 7pm AGM & talk
The AGM, which will be kept as brief as possible, will be followed by a presentation by the well-known Chinese costume historian, author and long-time TSHK member, Valery Garrett, who actually spoke on this topic at the very first Textile Society meeting back in the early 90s - a historic occasion.
In this illustrated talk, Valery will take as her subject the cheong sam or qi pao,the iconic,form-fitting dress which is an enduring symbol of Chinese women and provides inspiration for fashion designers around the world.
She traces the development of the cheong sam from its birth in Shanghai, when it shocked the nation, until it declined in the latter years of the 20th century. As a costume historian, Valery has written six books and numerous articles on the history of Chinese dress. She is an Honorary Research Fellow at the Centre of Asian Studies, HKU.
This will be a very special event, with complimentary drinks and light refreshments beforehand. Please feel free to wear a cheong sam, if you have one.
