CPI for Urban non-manual employees - May, 2007

The All-India Consumer Price Index for Urban Non-Manual Employees CPI(UNME) on base 1984-85=100, for the month of May, 2007 has been released by the Central Statistical Organization (CSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation together with the indices for 59 selected urban centers in India.

The All-India CPI (UNME) for May, 2007 is 503, which is 2 points more than the index for the previous month i.e. April, 2007. The All India General Index increased by 1.6 points due to rise in Index under which effected an increase of 0.3 points in All India General Index during May, 2007.

When compared with the corresponding All-India index for May, 2006, the index for the month of May, 2007 has shown a rise of 6.8 % over the year.

Statement-1 gives the CPI (UNME) for All-India and 59 selected urban centres in the country for May, 2007 together with the indices for the preceding five months.

Statement-2 gives a comparison of CPI (UNME) for May, 2007 in respect of 59 selected urban centres with the indices for the corresponding month of last year, namely May, 2006.

Percentage change in the index is shown in the last column. It may be noted from the statement that the variation in the index for various centres ranges from 2.0 to 12.9 percent, with the maximum increase being in the case of Aurangabad centre and minimum increase in the index of Calicut centre.

The increase is less than 5 percent for 8 centres, 5.0 to 6.0 percent for 14 centres, 6.1 to 7.0 percent for 9 centres and 7.1 to 9.0 percent for 22 centres and 9.1 percent and above for remaining 6 centres.

As many as 28 centres have lower annual percentage increase as compared to that of All-India figure of 6.8 percent. 30 centres have recorded higher percentage increase as compared to All-India average and one centre recorded growth equal to All India Average.
