The Synthetic Yarn & Fibers Association held its second annual Summer Conference from August 2nd to 4th at the Marriott Grand Dunes in Myrtle Beach.

The conference papers presented a range of topics of interest to members, ranging from non woven processes to applications for fibers with coconut shell particles. President Ulrik Frodermann of Oerlikon Barmag welcomed the attendees on Friday morning and Chris Flanagan the Business Manager of International Sales for Unifi opened the session with a review of the positioning of Unifi in the textile filament markets regionally and globally.

He also commented on the progress that is being made in CAFTA following the rather slow start of the free trade agreement. The positive signs of investment, competitiveness with Asia, and increased trade within the region were key messages. The Oerlikon Neumag group provided 2 papers with Chip Herzog explaining the latest staple fiber extrusion technologies and Dan Feroe outlining the various nonwoven processes and their position in the market.

Steve Plach of BP educated the delegates on the PTA market and with BP and its j/v holdings accounting for 25% of global PTA capacity he was clearly speaking from a position of market strength. He provided data to show that oil has been growing more slowly than both coal and natural gas as the world's major energy sources.

In the Asia Pacific region coal accounts for 50% of the energy generated. He demonstrated that PTA prices in the US were very closely linked to gasoline, and that gasoline supply/demand balances remain tight despite high prices. The Friday session was concluded with Barry Kelly of Karl Mayer giving an update on Warping processes.
