The Minister of Foreign Affairs Mrs Erato Kozakou Marcoullis participated at the European Union Informal Meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers (Gymnich), which took place in Viana do Castelo, Portugal from 7-8 September 2007.
The EU Foreign Affairs Ministers, the High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, Secretary-General of the Council of the European Union Mr Javier Solana and the European Commissioner in charge of External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy Mrs Benita Ferrero-Waldner, participated at the meeting.
In the second day of the meeting, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the three candidate countries for accession to the EU, Croatia, Turkey and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia were invited for lunch.
At the meeting, which was organised by the Portuguese Presidency of the EU, the Foreign Affairs Ministers were given the opportunity to express and exchange views on important issues. More specifically, they discussed the Intergovernmental Conference for the EU Reform Treaty, the status of Kosovo, Middle East issues and the EU summit meetings, which will take place during the Portuguese Presidency (EU-Russia, EU-Iran, EU-Ukraine, EU-Africa), with emphasis on the relations between the EU and Russia and the EU and Africa.
In her interventions, the Foreign Minister presented Cyprus' positions on almost all the issues of the agenda. She also briefed her counterparts on the outcome of the meeting of 5th September between President Papadopoulos and the Turkish Cypriot leader.
