Chemistry Innovation and the Chemical Industries Association (Friday 5 October) are pleased that the Government is to use Lord Sainsbury's review of innovation and science in the UK as a blueprint to drive success.

Both organisations welcome the Government's positive response to the call for a fully integrated approach to science and innovation, with a pledge to invest £1 billion to boost business innovation and technology development, as a mechanism for the country to compete in the globalised economy.

The report's key recommendations included a new leadership and coordination role for the Technology Strategy Board; improving the system of intellectual property rights with more effective use being made of the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) patent registration database and a campaign to improve the teaching of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects in schools.

Commenting on the report Carol Boyer-Spooner, Chemistry Innovation Chief Executive, said, “I am delighted that the Government has backed Lord Sainsbury's call for innovation to be embedded in Departmental Strategic Objectives and for better strategic coordination of the government's delivery on innovation."

"This will support Chemistry Innovation in driving the innovation agenda between chemistry-using industry, academia and government to effectively translate UK innovation into UK business success.”

Speaking at the Global Chemical Industry Convention Steve Elliott, Chemical Industries Association Chief Executive added, “Lord Sainsbury's call for a campaign to improve the teaching of STEM subjects in schools is absolutely right."

"The chemical industry is leading the way in green technology but we need to increase the number of quality graduates and STEM aware school leavers in the UK if we are to maintain momentum and be world leaders.”
