The Chemical Industries Association welcomed the publication of the Science and Technology Select Committee's report on the Funding of Science and Discovery Centres.

The CIA supports the report's recommendation that the government conducts research into the effectiveness of Science Centres in encouraging students into STEM subjects and address their security of long term funding.

The report also recommends that work be carried out to improve collaboration and best practice between Science Centres and partners.

Steve Elliott, CIA Chief Executive said, “Science Centres are an integral part of the work needed to raise science understanding for everyone in the UK."

"The recommendations of the Science and Technology Select Committees are an important step in putting these centres on a sound footing.”

Elliott added “I have worked closely with the Catalyst Science and Discovery Centre in Widnes which takes science out of the text books and into real life in the most exciting hands on way possible."

"It is an inspiring and educational experience for children and adults alike. I am convinced that Catalyst and other centres have a long-term impact on attitudes to science."

"I want to see closer coordination and sharing of good practice between science centres to deliver these benefits to the whole of the UK.”

Ian Pearson MP, Minister of State for Science and Innovation, indicated to the Science and Technology Select Committee that he was willing to take on Ministerial responsibility for Science Centres. The chemical industry welcomes a government champion for science centres as an important step forward.
