The Minister of Foreign Affairs Mrs Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis departed yesterday for Portugal in order to attend the ninth Euro-Mediterranean Ministerial Meeting of Foreign Affairs, which will be held in Lisbon on 5 and 6 November 2007.

The Euro-Mediterranean Partnership was established by the Barcelona Declaration of 1995 and has since formed the institutional framework for the Barcelona Process regarding political, economic, social and cultural cooperation between the 27 EU member states and the Mediterranean countries: Egypt, Algeria, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria, Turkey, Tunisia and the Palestinian Authority.

The Lisbon Conclusions constitute the main document to be adopted by this year's meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Barcelona Process and will concern relations between Europe and the Mediterranean in the areas of policy and security, social, cultural, economic and financial cooperation. The peace-keeping process in the Middle East is also on the agenda for discussion.

Mrs Marcoullis will make an intervention during the meeting to speak about the Middle East peace process, terrorism, illegal immigration, pollution in the Mediterranean, climatic changes and their economic impact on the region, and the need to reinforce the role of women in society in both European and Mediterranean countries.
