Wool Textile Training Course at CSIRO in Geelong

Wool producers, textile merchants and manufacturers from China, Vietnam, Thailand, Korea, India and the US have just completed a two-week Australian Wool Textile Training Course (AWTTC) at CSIRO Textile and Fibre Technology in Geelong.
In its second year, the Course's six modules are designed to provide participants with a complete overview of the processes involved in producing and manufacturing wool textiles. Innovations at each step along the supply chain are major themes.
Following an international survey of the training needs of the wool industry by IFC Chief Executive, Barry White, the AWTCC was established in 2005 with funding provided by the International Fibre Centre (IFC), Australian Wool Innovation Ltd (AWI) and the Australian Wool Education Trust.
"We discovered a real lack of educational facilities for the wool industry," Mr White said. "However, with the establishment of this course we believe that the major players can now gain the information they need to better understand how the industry operates right down the chain."
Conducting the course at CSIRO Textile and Fibre Technology's Geelong enabled participants to experience, first-hand, a wide range of industry technologies and processes, from the workings of pilot scale mill and new dyeing and finishing techniques, to textile testing and the use of microscopy as a means of improving the quality of finished products.
The six course modules - presented by experts from CSIRO, Deakin University, AWI, Gordon TAFE, the IFC and the wool supply chain - covered the processes of wool collection and manufacture from the shearing shed to the processing mill and on to garment making and the retail market.
