The Western Australian Farmers Federation (Inc) (WAFarmers) Wool Council, have expressed concern at recent comments made by prominent sheepmeat processor, Mr Roger Fletcher, where it was suggested that the live sheep export industry should be stopped.
WAFarmers Wool Council Senior Vice President, Kim Henderson, said the reality is that the Western Australian live sheep export was a key factor in sustaining a sheep and wool industry in the state.
“If live export is stopped in WA, there simply won't be a wool industry, and it is disappointing that Mr Fletcher is failing to acknowledge this.”
“Mr Fletcher's comment regarding the loss of job opportunities by not processing sheep onshore is a moot point, given that those countries importing the vast majority of meat, will only accept live sheep,” concluded Mr Henderson.
