The seasonally adjusted manufacturing production for the three months ended May 2009 decreased by 3.0% compared with the previous three months, an improvement from the 4.4% quarter-on-quarter decrease in April 2009. Lower production levels were reported by eight of the ten manufacturing divisions during the latest three months.

The decrease was driven mainly by lower production in petroleum, chemical products (contributing -0,9 of a percentage point), textiles, clothing, leather and footwear and furniture and 'other' manufacturing (each contributing -0,4 of a percentage point).

The estimated total value of sales of manufactured products at current prices for the three months ended May 2009 decreased by 4.9% (-R14 536 million), after seasonal adjustment, compared with the previous three months. Lower manufacturing sales were reported by nine of the ten manufacturing divisions during this period.
