To prevent the duplication of fake goods in local market, the Union Textiles Ministry has decided to brand handlooms and is thinking of giving the industry a heritage label.
To promote textiles, a council had been assigned with the task of creating a handloom brand for hand-woven commodities in order that they were not duplicated, said Chairman of Tamil Nadu Handloom Export Promotion Council M Sivakkanan.
The council is already in full swing to create a brand and the ministry also financed design centres at Kannur (Kerala), Karu (TN), Panipat (Haryana) and Kerera (UP), said M Sivakkanan. He also added that the Union Commerce Ministry declared these centres as towns of export excellence.
Speaking at the workshop on 'Strategies and preparedness for trade and globalisation in India for textile and clothing sector', Sivakannan said that textiles industry in general and handloom industry in particular were excited at the hope on stepping into a new age of WTO regime and globalisation and therefore, the industry had to brace itself in a big way.
This industry has vast opportunity to reach $85 billion by 2010 from the present revenue of $36 billion. With low-cost labour and ample natural wealth, India is coming up as a land with great opportunity after China. Handloom industry's aptitude to manufacture elaborate designs carefully woven on fabrics in an attractive range of colours is its advantage, said S Ramachandra, Director for Handlooms and Textiles.
