Scientists at the University of Bolton are to begin working closely with two of India's most prestigious materials research institutions.

The University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the South India Textile Research Association (SITRA) and the North Textile Research Association (NITRA).

SITRA specialises in medical textiles research, NITRA in protective textiles. They are the only two textile research groups recognised by the Indian government as Centres of Excellence in their respective fields.

The University of Bolton is recognised by its government as 'world-leading' in materials research.

The Memorandum of Understandings signings took place during a visit to the University by delegates from the Indian government's Ministry of Textiles as well as the two research organisations. The signings were witnessed by the Joint Secretary of the Indian Ministry of Textiles, Mr Bhupendra Singh and the University of Bolton's Vice Chancellor, Dr George Holmes.

The collaboration will be far reaching; the University will work with both SITRA and NITRA to:
• exchange mutually beneficial research findings

• conduct research together at each others' testing facilities

• exchange staff and work together to develop each others' research teams

• exchange experts and scientists to guide research work, organise conferences and training programmes.

Research scientists from the University of Bolton who will take part in the exchange of knowledge and research development include Professor Subhash Anand, Prof Baljinder Kandola and Dr Subbiyan 'Raj' Rajendran.

Said Prof Peter Marsh, Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of Bolton: 'These two organisations are the elite of India's textiles research teams in their respective fields.

'The University of Bolton has a long history of working closely with materials research experts in India, a country with a rich history, knowledge and understanding of textiles and their future development.

'This is a great honour for the University, but also a reflection of our standing in this research area, internationally. We look forward to working together.'
