'I am very passionate about the textile business' – Nipun Arora, Aarvee Denims

When prodded to speak about himself and his views on management he articulately says, “I make it a point to learn new things. What could have been done in a particular way yesterday may not be applicable today. What you do today possibly cannot be applied tomorrow.

“I always believe - give attention to a small problem before it turns in to a plague. The bigger problems will either not come up or they will get solved easily or by themselves.

“Secondly, “When in business, never have an ego. Set an example and be the first to apologize or retract a statement if necessary. Unless you do not set an example, the others will also try to justify and defend their actions.

“Thirdly, when looking for answers to issues, look for the solution in the problem itself. I ask the person who has brought the problem to me to give a solution, which as per my understanding is the way to find a solution and also instills a sense of pride in the person.

“Fourthly and the most important – I believe in generating a feeling of ownership among the team members of the company. By getting a feeling of ownership, people tend to solve problems by themselves, which in turn reduces the number of problems I would have to tackle and solve on a day to-day basis”.

He continues, “Textiles cannot become a fully professionally managed business. I know a few family managed businesses in Europe, which have survived and are still doing well, while the fully professionally managed ones have fallen by the way-side. You need have to have a hand on the pulse, an eye and be updated of your textile business, to generate better returns”.

The flipside however is that Aarvee Denims is headed by a most astute professional from the denim industry – Mr KK Mohale, who is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and also an Indian Institute of Management (IIM-A) pass out.

He says he loves sales and marketing and used to handle the category in earlier years. The marketing function is now handled by his younger brother – Pankaj Arora, who in turn has good professionals in his team. Nipun is of the opinion that, “Production decisions are market-led and oriented. One cannot produce for passion, if there is no market for the product”.

“When selecting staff for particular profiles in the organisation, Aarvee chooses to select down-to-earth people, someone who shows willingness to learn and loves his company and work, rather than delving on just academic credentials”, he reveals.

He quotes Anna Hazare the Gandhian leader who said – 'Love your country' a slogan which united all Indians irrespective of caste and creed in the fight for the Lokpal bill. Nipun wants the people who work for Aarvee to display the same passion towards the organisation.

He does not believe in taking any personal credit for any achievement or a successful project implemented by him. He is modest enough to give all the due credit to his father. Peer pressure does not bring any undue pressure on Nipun, but Nipun motivates him, when someone compares him with his father and tries to perform as well if not better.
