CSD says cotton crops combat the heat

Cotton Seed Distributors Ltd (CSD) stated that the extremely hot conditions over the Christmas/New Year period have tested cotton growers in most areas, and the Gwydir and Border Rivers regions have been no exception.

CSD extension and development agronomist at Moree, James Quinn, said the hot conditions tested the ability of many irrigators in the Gwydir Valley to keep water requirements up to their crops.

“Fortunately most people realize that this is such a crucial part of the season and have adjusted their irrigation schedules to meet the demand.

“While crops don't perform at their best under these hot conditions, the worst thing you could do is combine heat stress with water stress and most growers have been able to avoid this.

“Hot conditions can impact on the fruiting of the crop, whether that is shedding of fruit or the production of deformed bolls. As temperatures have declined slightly into the second week of January we are seeing a much better boll set, so most crops should be able to compensate, by producing more later fruit,” he said.

Fellow CSD agronomist in the Border Rivers, David Kelly, said the hot end to 2005 and start to 2006 had also put growers under pressure in the Goondiwindi and St George regions, where maximum temperatures were not below 37 degrees for more than two weeks straight over the Christmas/ New Year period.

“This extreme temperature has resulted in a marked increase in daily water use during these hot conditions, and a lot of this water has been used by plants just too keep themselves alive.
