Silk Park at Zakura: Zargar, Jammu & Kashmir to promote traditional industry

A silk Park equipped with all modern facilities in cocoon rearing, reeling, silk weaving and value addition facilities is fast coming up at Zakura near here to give boost to traditional silk Industry in the state.

About 40 silk Industries are being set-up in the park coming up an estimated cost of Rs.8 crore. Over 2000 persons would get direct employment in the silk park.

This was revealed during the inspection of country's one of the Premier silk worm seed station at Mirgund Pattan near here yesterday, by the Minister for Agriculture, Mr. Abdul Aziz Zargar. The Director Sericulture, Dr. A.R. Trag accompanied the Minister.

The Minister was shown live demonstration of seed production activities like silk worm rearing, breeding and Moth examination at the basic seed station were standardized saplings of high Yielding Mulberry varieties like Goshoermi, Kaksu, Ichinose, KNG etc are raised and multiplied for distribution among the farmers besides maintenance of Germ plasm of various mulberry varieties.

There are 48000 Dwarf and 7000 Tall high yielding mulberry varieties existing in the farm from which about 3 lakh Kgs of leaf is obtained yearly for rearing of silk worms in the station and also supply to the needy silk worm rearers in the surrounding villages of Baramulla and Budgam districts.

The Minister was also shown a Floriculture nursery set up on the directions of the Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed over 4 kanals of landnear the basic seed station, Mirgund where corms of elite varieties of Gladioli (cut flower) plants have been sown to promote floriculture.
