Darwani Textile Mills struggles for existence

Darwani Textile Mill (DTM), the highest yarn producer among BTMC's 79 textile mills, is suffering in the hands of inefficient and indifferent authorities.
On the one hand, half of the machines in mill remain inoperative for months due to shortage of spare parts and other materials.
Moreover, machines in use are deteriorating due to lack of maintenance. In fact, polythene-sheet covers protect the machinery from rain that comes through the poor-roof.
What is more, it is almost 18 months since DTM's 358 employees last received their salary because of non-allotment of funds for years to run the mill.
Incidents of pilferage of mill equipment and materials are nothing uncommon in the DTM that has been leased to a businessman of Narayanganj.
DTM, which started commercial production in 1980 and made a net profit of Tk30 million (3.0 crore) in 1990, is now reeling under the burden of mounting loan.
