In May this year, experienced knitter Carla Esden-Tempska opened Chez Casuelle, a downtown shop specially dedicated to the knitting stuff and community. Chez Casuelle sells luxury and unusual yarns, as well as knitting tools and accessories such as beads.

Esden-Tempska, 46, teaches knitting and has free knitting clinics at the shop, 108 S. Second St. Earlier, Esden-Tempska worked 15 years developing software for a data-marketing company in Chicago.

In 2002, she re-developed interest in knitting and started an Internet business to improve upon it. She found a growing community of knitters and made contacts with them on the Internet.

Two years ago, she left her software job and migrated to Lady Lake to continue her Internet business. Besides, she got into yarn full time when she opened her 700 square foot shop.

She also designs patterns and sells them to yarn companies. One of her designs, "Crossover Poncho", has appeared in the knitting fashion book 'Ribbon Style' by Vermont author Cheryl Potter.

Yarn can be spun thick or thin and is often spun from natural fibers such as wool, cotton, silk and flax.

Many yarns sold in Chez Casuelle are spun by hand rather than by machine. It's difficult to program machines to achieve many colors, according to the veteran knitter.
